Conclusion

Who owned this painting before it passed to Nederlands Beheersinstituut is not known.

Explanation

The painting may have been part of property confiscated from Germans after the war. In 1947, the Winterswijk representatives at Nederlands Beheersinstituut’s Bureau Roerende Goederen van Vijanden en Landverraders passed various paintings on to Stichting Nederlands Kunstbezit.

A printed label is attached to the reverse of the painting with the printed word: ‘Kunstbezit’ (art property) and in written by hand: ‘Winter’ and ‘7098’.
