This museum has 1 object with a potentially problematic provenance.
Result of this investigation
Woerden City Museum reports one object with problematic provenance: a tapestry that was already investigated in 1999 and which is still the subject of doubt regarding provenance. It was held by the RKD in The Hague for safekeeping during the Second World War, after which RKD gave it to the museum. Investigators further investigated municipal archive correspondence regarding acquisitions, annual reports and committee and council resolutions. Not all the art in the collection has complete provenance: when the museum made purchases, the object was always described, but unfortunately not always where it was bought. Investigators also checked the museum archive. Hardly any objects were purchased in the last thirty years, and the items which were bought were mainly contemporary art. Today, when historical and nineteenth-century art is purchased, buyers check provenance. Investigators checked thirteen items (seven paintings, two drawings, three etchings and a watercolour) at RKD but unfortunately found little new information with which to fill in the missing provenance.
