Conclusion

When and from whom Kunsthaus Malmedé acquired this painting is not known.

Explanation

Kunsthaus Malmedé at Unter Sachsenhausen 33 in Cologne played an active role in acquiring art from countries occupied by Germany during the war. From 1933, the gallery published two exhibition catalogues a year. This painting appears in the autumn 1940 catalogue. When and from whom the painting was acquired is unclear, however, a previous owner is listed as ‘Sammlung Château Jouy aux Arches’. Jouy aux Arches is a village on the Moselle in Loraine, France.
