Conclusion

This painting was part of the prewar collection of Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker.

Explanation

This painting had been in the Goudstikker firm’s possession since 1882. Jacques Goudstikker ran the company from 1924. It was part of Goudstikker’s collection at the outbreak of the Second World War and after he fled it came into the possession of Alois Miedl, who took over the art gallery. The painting was auctioned on 10 April 1945 by Frederik Muller. Goudstikker died in an accident while fleeing the country on 16 May 1940.

The museum is in contact with the heirs.
