Conclusion

The provenance of painting is uncertain since it is unclear when and from whom Vitale Bloch or art dealer D.A Hoogendijk acquired the painting.

Explanation

This painting is part of the 'Nederlandse Kunstcollectie' under government control. On 24 February 1960 it was given to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It is listed on the website of Bureau Herkomst Gezocht.

It is unclear how this painting came onto the Dutch art market. Vitale Bloch was a Jewish Russian-Polish art historian, an art dealer and a collector who continued his business in The Hague in the war years. He was in close touch with Dienststelle Mühlmann, Erhard Göpel, who bought for Hitler, and Walter Andreas Hofer, director of Göring’s collection. Dr Erhard Göpel is known to have acquired several paintings for the proposed Hitler museum in Linz through art dealer M. Herman Raft. How and in what sequence the various transactions took place during 1943 that led to Göpel being in possession of this painting are no longer known.
