Investigation results

This museum has 19 objects with a potentially problematic provenance.

Result of this investigation

The museum reports that its collection contains several works of art with problematic provenance.
The following items were listed in the final report of the 1940-1948 investigation, Eindrapportage Herkomst & Restitutie of December 2000:

  • An albarello, bought in May 1936 at a Julius Böhler auction in Munich, originally from the collection of Margarete Oppenheim, a Jewish collector.
  • A silver cup stand by Andries Grill and an Islamic earthenware dish bought in 1937 at Paul Graupe auction house in Berlin, originally from Emma Budge’s confiscated collection.

Two paintings and four Brush Backs were sold in 1942 at Van Marle & Bignell auction house in The Hague and originally owned by S.E.L. Larsen-Menzel, a Jewish collector. She lent the objects to the museum in 1939 when she and her children left for the United States. In 1942, regime officials confiscated them as enemy property and put them up for auction, where Sala art gallery bought them. How they arrived at the museum is unclear.

  • Jan Toorop, On Nes, 1889, oil on canvas, 76.5 x 77.5 cm;
  • Marius Bauer, Oriental Street, oil on canvas, 76 x 135 cm;
  • four Brush Backs.

Investigators identified several objects with suspicious provenance. Two paintings and six drawings had been part of J. Goudstikker’s collection. Alois Miedl, who had taken the gallery over that year, sold these at Frederik Muller & Co auction house in Amsterdam in October 1940:

  • Jan Sluijters, African wearing a Yellow Loincloth, 1914, oil on canvas, 127.3 x 94.8 cm;
  • George Breitner, Portrait of a Woman in a Pink Blouse, 1890, oil on canvas, 194 x 87.5 cm;
  • Jan Toorop, Workers at the Candle Factory in Gouda, six drawings from a series of twelve. The other six were bought by Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum.

Since Haags Gemeentemuseum had already examined the years 1935-1956 in detail for the investigation of 1998 and 1999, this investigation focused exclusively on the years 1933-1935 and acquisitions of the years after 1956. The museum provided an inventory of acquisitions for the first period and checked the period after 1956 globally, examining annual reports, object data records and correspondence.

Investigators identified two paintings that were sold in 1942 at Van Marle & Bignell and Frederik Muller auction house. These were donated to the museum in 1980:

  • Floris Verster, White Delftware vase and bowl with violets, 1923, oil on panel, 34.5 x 24.5 cm,
  • Matthijs Maris, Landscape with Barns, 1860, oil on panel, 29.8 x 42 cm.
