Investigation results

This museum has 3 objects with a potentially problematic provenance.

Result of this investigation

West Friesland Museum investigators checked annual reports, acquisition books, inventory cards and registration system and in addition investigated RKD records and West Friesland archives. One painting that had at one time been on sale at Kunsthandel Goudstikker seemed at first to pose a problem. Closer investigation revealed that the work was one of several that had been returned to Jacques Goudstikker’s widow after the war and later sold by her. Various items made for Jewish liturgical use are also of entirely or partially incomplete provenance. These include a water basin for washing the hands at mealtime, a Chanukah candelabrum and a utensil which may be either a sugar caster or a spice box. Investigators are currently checking these items.

About this museum and its collection

West Friesland Museum surveys the cultural history of the West Friesland region, focusing on the years 1500 to 1800: the rise of the Golden Age, its triumph and the years that followed. Various rooms and galleries feature objects relating to applied art, civic guards, Dutch East India Company (VOC), trade and archaeology. West Friesland Museum opened in 1881, in States College an historical building dating from 1632.
